As a member of the Board of Governors of the Uniform Code Council since its formation in 1974, Alan Haberman has helped to provide strategic guidance to the standardization and adoption of bar coding across industries, globally.
His career has spanned a variety of challenging business and management assignments. He began his career on Wall Street with Carl M. Loeb & Co. and entered supermarketing in 1956 as Executive Vice President of Hills Supermarkets, Inc. After a merger, he became President of Hills-Korvettes Supermarkets and a member of the E. J. Korvette Board of Directors, following which he served as Chief Executive Officer of First National Stores, Inc. From 1979 to 1999 he was managing associate of Boston Management and Funding Associates.
Mr. Haberman has also served on numerous industry and civic boards. He is Chairman of Sub Committee 31 on Automatic Identification and Data Capture Techniques of the Joint Technical Committee 1 (JTC1) on Information Technology. JTC1 is jointly sponsored by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International ElectroTechnical Commission (IEC). SC31 was established in 1996 and focuses on the standardization of data formats, data syntax, data structures, data encoding and technologies for the process of automatic identification and data capture. He acted for the Uniform Code Council in the creation of the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />MIT Auto-ID Research Center which was inaugurated in November of 1999 and acted as its Chairman Pro Tem for the first 17 months of its existence. In the early 1970’s he served as Chairman of the Symbol Selection Subcommittee of the Ad Hoc Committee for a Grocery Code when the U.P.C. code, symbol and system were born and the foundation of the Uniform Code Council was put in place.
He was graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Graduate School of Business.
